Summing Things Up...By the Numbers
It's truly mind boggling how many ancestors we each have, and how quickly the quantity multiplies of our 2nd Great Grandparents, 3rd Great Grandparents, 4th Great Grandparents, and so on. I hadn't really thought much about it or paid much attention until I started working on discovering family history. I have no doubt that everyone is aware that they have 4 Grandparents and 8 Great Grandparents, but above that, I don't think many people have given it much thought...and I hadn't either.
The numbers multiply crazy quickly once we do the math. With each generation, the number of Great Grandparents doubles. Since we all have 8 Great Grandparents, that means we all have sixteen 2nd Great Grandparents, and thirty-two 3rd Great Grandparents, and so on...and I'll make a chart...
So this means my 10th Great Grandparents are 13 generations before me...since I'm also adding me, my Parents and my Grandparents' generations to the mix. 13 generations before me would take us back about 400 years more or less, so maybe around the year 1600. In order for me to be living and breathing today, in the year 1600, 4,094 people had to have reproduced, and their offspring had to reproduce, and theirs, and then theirs, and on and on until we got to 1961 when I was born.
And if we look at this even closer, it's even more mind bending to the point that it seems to be hard to grasp if not impossible. If we back up 13 more generations, so this would take us back roughly another 400 years to about the year 1200, that means 33,538,048 (and yes, that says over 33 million) people had to reproduce in order for me to be alive today, which means I have DNA segments in me from 33,538,048 ancestors...and so do you! Here's another chart to give everyone something to contemplate...

I still am having a hard time wrapping my mind around this. So for me, since my Mother's family is from Italy and Dad's is from Bohemia, if we split the number of my 23rd Great Grandparents in half, since half would have been in Italy and half in Bohemia, that means 16,769,024 Italians had to have reproduced and the same number in Bohemia in order for me to be here today. Both countries are pretty small so, were there even 16 million people living in each country in the year 1200? Where the hell did all my ancestors come from?...all 33 million of them?
This is just so crazy. Over 33 million people had to be living (and reproducing) in the year 1200 in order for me to be here blogging today...and for you as well, in order for you to be here reading this blog! So I would like to thank all of my 33,538,048 ancestors because without every one of you, I wouldn't be here today eating too much pastry. OMG, all this math is making my head spin. I could really go for a piece of pie.
And I have gotten way off topic here. When in reality, today's topic is all about the Patriarch and Matriarch and their first generation of Lutovskys (Generation 0) born in the USA. Although, since we're on the topic of high numbers, this leads perfectly into talking about John and Katherine and their 16 children who are all listed below.
I have them arranged from the oldest, Mary, to the youngest Rudy. You can see there are two Anns listed...or one Ann and one Annie. The first baby they named Ann only lived for 1 day. It was customary at this time that if a child passed away, then, if there was another child born later, that baby would be given the same name as a way to honor the baby who didn't make it.
The others however, seemed to have lead long lives, and a few of them really long. Even though their birth and death years are listed above, here's the breakdown on age when each passed away.
Patriarch John Lutovsky - 95.5 years old. He would have turned 96 later that year.
Matriarch Katherine Broz Lutovsky - 61 years old. She would have turned 62 three weeks later. She has one of the shortest lifespan out of her immediate family, but I guess that makes sense given she gave birth to 16 babies. That must take a toll on a body.
Their Children:
Mary Lutovsky: 84 years old.
Joseph J. Lutovsky: 59 years old
Charles Lutovsky: 92 years old. Charles died 5 days before his 93rd birthday, and his birthday was November 3rd, the same day as me and my sister.
AJ (Anton Joseph) Lutovsky: 96 years old. AJ died 5 days after his 96th birthday.
Fritz (Frank) Lutovsky: 90 years old. He would have turned 91 four months later.
Wences (Wenceslaus) Lutovsky: 74 years old. He would have turned 75 three months later.
Sister Mary Bernarda (Stephanie) Lutovsky: 74 years old. She would have turned 75 fifteen days later.
Josephine Lutovsky: 100 years old. Josephine passed away six days after her 100th birthday.
Sister Mary Gabrielis (Agnes) Lutovsky: 86 years old. She passed away two months before her 87th birthday.
Lillian Lutovsky: 83 years old..
Ann Lutovsky: 1 day old. She was buried in St. Luke's cemetery in Veseleyville, ND, as well as many of the other people above.
Annie Lutovsky: 71 years old. I still have not located any birth records or birth information for her. All I know is she was born in 1907.
Jack (John) Lutovsky: 91 years old.
Amelia Lutovsky: 74 years old.
Ole (Aloysious) Lutovsky: 73 years old.
Rudy Lutovsky: 84 years old.
