"Without Geography You're Nowhere." - Jimmy Buffet

Where is Southern Bohemia?

When John Lutovsky imigrated to the US, Czech Republic was still called Bohemia, and would remain as Bohemia for another 27 years before it became Czechoslovakia. In all the paperwork that I have copies of, the Lutovsky clan lived consistently in the same areas for the past 300 years at least. I still have more to discover on where they were at more than 300 years ago, but I have a feeling probably not too far away, if away at all.

Below is a map of modern day Czech Republic. I put circles around the areas where our Lutovsky ancestors have been living. The top circle is of the town of Tábor. Tábor is both a town and a district, and today, districts don't really correspond to anything that we have in the US. Although, if we think of them as a county, that's probably close enough. The districts used to function similarly to how counties function here in the US, but in 2003 they basically took any governing responsibility, power and decision making away from the districts and gave those responsibilities to municipalities. The districts still exist though, for defining territories, so the districts now are basically like a county, but one that just defines a geographic location.

The large circle is the area where our Lutovsky ancestors lived for at least 300 years before emigrating from Bohemia. And the map below this one shows a close up of the large circle. If you click on the maps you'll be able to see large versions of them.

Below is a close up of the large circled area. You can see that I still have Tábor circled at the top to help keep your bearings. These are all the villages where our Lutovsky ancestors lived...and still are living. This is actually a pretty small area. Looking at the places on a map like this makes it seem as if they are all far apart, but they're not. They're all only a couple miles apart. And take note of the village of Slapy on the map, although I'll post this map again when I am talking about Slapy, but I have some things to cover about Slapy coming up soon in a post.

The map below demonstrates the distance between the villages a bit better. John Lutovsky is from Lom and Katherine Broz Lutovsky is from Hlavatce. The distance between the two villages is 5.4 miles.

And lastly, just for kicks, I threw in one more map. If you notice in the above maps the bottom most circle is always around the town of Sobeslav, which is because that is the furthest southern town that I have found so far that Lutovskys have lived in. Below is a map which shows the distance from Sobeslav to Lutová, which is only 33 miles away. At some point the Lutovskys, or a Lutovsky left Lutová and went up north a bit and settled. However, who that was, is still to be discovered.
